It was sunny and cool this morning with a north wind blowing 5 to 15 mph. The temperature was low 60’s at ride start and mid 60’s at rides end. I traveled one of my old east routes then turned north so I would have a tail wind for the latter stage of the ride. The wind really took its toll on my average speed. There were no dog dashes or traffic issues today.

Cloudy, 70 degrees at ride start, a slight south breeze, and very humid. I wore a light weight long sleeved jersey and it was to much. I rode into the north side of Temple then out Moore’s Mill Rd and around the airport. I went north on highway 317 for a few miles. A on coming car chose to pass a truck and made me very uncomfortable passing me a couple of feet away at a high rate of speed.   Such is life! I turned onto Pendleton Rd and came back home.
There was some discomfort in my compromised right hip in the beginning. I geared down, kept the cadence up, and the pressure off the hip. The further I rode the better the hip felt. There were a couple of dog dashes but they were all sound and fury. It seemed like more traffic today than usual.

I should have ridden farther but I thought my wife had a 1:00 pm doctor’s appointment.  When I returned home I found she had cancelled the appointment.

A stiff SSE wind was blowing this morning so I chose the Oenaville, Bellfalls route to catch a tail wind for the mid to latter part of the ride. I haven’t been this route all summer. I was surprised at the condition of portions of the roadway and approaches to bridges due to the drought and high temperatures. There were heat/stress cracks in many areas that would easily swallow the width of a road bike tire! Some of the roadway has been resurfaced with chip and seal and man is it rough! I don’t understand how the road crews can lay a road surface with such whoop de dos and divots!
The humidity and temperature was up compared to yesterday. It was mid seventies at ride start and low eighties at ride end. I broke a good sweat and drank a water bottle and a half. I stopped at mile 21 and ate a granola bar on Big Elm Rd.
There were no dog dashes today. Traffic was light.

It was cool again this morning so I put on a long sleeved jersey for the ride. The temperature at ride start was about 65 degrees and it was about 75 degrees at rides end. The wind picked up out of the SSE at 10 to 15 mph. It was a sunny day. I steered clear of the loop today since I discovered the fresh chip and seal and loose gravel on the shoulders yesterday. I went through a residential area and on to Moore’s Mill Rd. I continued on to highway 317 and to Pendleton Rd. I stopped on Pendleton Rd at my 20 mile mark and ate a granola bar in the shade of some round hay bales. They say with the drought we are experiencing the round bales are going for up to $175.00 each if you can find them for sale.
There was a dog dash right after the rest stop but it wasn’t serious. However the dog was a huge one. There was another dog dash in Pendleton but I won. The wind had picked up by this time and shredded the good average speed I built in the early part of the ride.

Summit Strength Training

I went to the gym after running errands most of the afternoon.  I was early enough to beat the after 5:00 PM crowd so I was able to quickly get my routine completed.  I worked upper and lower body.  My legs felt a little tight, perhaps from the morning bike ride.  My weight was 197.  I need to lose 17 pounds to be quicker on the bike.  At least I’m not gaining.  I can’t seem to manage the food quality and quantity properly!

I’ve errands to run today so I cut my ride short today.  The loop road shoulders were covered in loose gravel from recent road work so I turned around and quickly left the loop behind.  Fresh chip and seal road surface with lots of loose gravel is a cyclist’s nightmare! I kept waiting to catch a gravel bullet from the oncoming cars.

The weather was perfect; cool, calm, and sunny.  Traffic was light.  It would have been the perfect day to ride long.  Sigh

Love Cures Bike Ride

I rode in The Scott & White Love Cures bike ride.  I meant to ride the 56 mile route.  I lost the pack when I made a wrong turn on a two lap loop and went back to do the second lap.  There wasn’t anyone to guide me to the proper route and  I mistakenly cut 18 miles off the tour.  I rode alone for two hours until the really fast guys began to catch me at about mile 35.  42 miles was enough for me on this day.

My first ride this week.  A warm morning and hot by rides end.  Two minor dog dashes.  Variable south to west breeze.  I did the loop, Wendland Rd, Mclanes Rd, Mouser Rd, 317 to Pendleton Rd, and back home.
